New York-based AIG has retained Burson-Marsteller Ltd., a pricey public relations firm.
Although the fee that AIG is paying New York-based Burson-Marsteller isn’t known, insiders in the PR industry told the New York Post that the insurer could be paying between $100,000 and $200,000 a month for its services.
Burson-Marsteller has its work cut out for it. AIG is trying to recover from its highly publicized $85 billion bailout plus a $37.8 billion loan and its controversial executive exit packages and junkets, which prompted New York Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo to order an end to the insurer’s spending.
“We hired Burson-Marsteller to help us respond to the huge volume of requests of information we’re receiving from customers, employees and the media,” said AIG spokesman Joe Norton. “We have more than offset the cost by canceling advertising and sponsorships.”
