With costs spiking in the United States and the dollar on the rise relative to many other world currencies, some Americans are considering retirement abroad to stretch their savings further and add adventure to their next chapter. But if retirement is already a complex planning endeavor, retiring in a foreign country adds many more wrinkles to the process — from new tax and health care systems to differences in costs and standards of living.
Using data from the Migration Policy Institute, InvestmentNews Research assessed the pros and cons of retirement in foreign countries where at least 5,000 American expats already reside. The following list of the top 10 foreign retirement destinations for Americans takes into account each country’s cost of living, health care staffing and tax burden.
