MSSB’s McAuliffe jumps to Merrill Lynch

Will head up BofA unit's institutional consulting group; wirehouse veteran

Tom McAuliffe, the director of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC’s institutional investment consulting group, is crossing the street to work for Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

As a director at Graystone Consulting at Morgan Stanley, Mr. McAuliffe oversaw more than 200 financial advisers providing advisory and fiduciary services to institutions such as corporate retirement plans, foundations, endowments and public funds. He will serve as the head of Merrill’s Institutional Consulting Group.
The news was announced in a memo to employees today from Andy Sieg, head of retirement services for Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Mr. McAuliffe will report to Mr. Sieg.

A wirehouse veteran, Mr. McAuliffe started his career with Smith Barney LLC in 1994 before taking a job with UBS Wealth Management. He spent more than four years with UBS in institutional consulting before moving on to Citigroup in 2006. He worked at Morgan Stanley less than two years before accepting the position with Merrill.

“Tom’s proven leadership, in-depth knowledge of investment advisory solutions and years of experience successfully collaborating with financial advisors will help us to drive growth and continue fortifying our institutional investment offering across the organization,” Mr. Sieg wrote in the memo.

According to BofA spokesman Matt Card, Mr. McAuliffe will work with about 70 advisers presently dedicated to mid- and large- size institutional clients. He’ll also support other groups serving institutional clients across the organization.

Mr. McAuliffe will assume his new position in April, replacing Kelly O’Dea, who was leading the Institutional Consulting Group on an interim basis. Ms. O’Dea will take on a new role as director of product and platform supervision and control in Merrill’s global wealth and investment management group.
