Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Springfield has appointed Michael R. Fanning senior vice president and chief operating officer of its U.S. insurance group.
The group covers the finance, compliance, marketing, operations, distribution and product management aspects of MassMutual’s disability income, life insurance and long-term-care products sold stateside. Mr. Fanning, 43, will handle its business operations.
Recently, he was vice president of new individual businesses at MetLife Inc. of New York. In that post, Mr. Fanning oversaw underwriting strategy, operations and medical departments.

ULLICO Inc. of Washington has hired Gary A. Amelio as president of its newly created retirement services unit.
Mr. Amelio, 50, has more than 26 years’ experience in the employee benefits, investment, executive-compensation and fiduciary areas. Since 2003, he has been director of the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board.

Chapman and Cutler LLP of Chicago has made securities partners Felice Foundos and Morrison Warren co-heads of the firm’s investment company practice.
In their new posts, they will look to expand the firm’s capabilities in the fund industry, as well as expand the practice.
Ms. Foundos, 43, joined Chapman in 1996. Mr. Warren, 40, joined the firm in 1990. Both provide legal counsel to investment companies, such as mutual funds and unit investment trusts.

The Chartered Alternative Investment Analysis Association in Amherst, Mass., has appointed Heather Kane as director of global events and Maia Porter as director of member services.
Ms. Kane, 28, is responsible for expanding the association’s informational events for potential candidates in financial centers across the globe. She also coordinates with various CAIA chapters, as well as acting as the liaison for industry organizations with which it partners. This is a newly created position.
Ms. Porter, 36, serves as a liaison for all members and works to add member benefits and programs, and helps to establish new worldwide chapters.

Independence Financial Associates, the Philadelphia agency of The Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co. and its broker-dealer subsidiary, Horner Townsend & Kent Inc. of Horsham, Pa., has named Stephen C. Target managing partner and James A. Clary managing director.
Most recently, Mr. Target, 40, was managing director of Northwestern Mutual Financial Network in Milwaukee.
Mr. Clary, 47, was brought over from Penn Mutual’s home office in Horsham, where he served as senior vice president.
JS Asset Management LLC of West Conshohocken, Pa., has appointed Christopher L. Fearey director of marketing.
Mr. Fearey, 36, was a vice president with Brandywine Global Investment Management in Philadelphia. He worked in the institutional sales group and was responsible for consultant relations and direct sales.

Dimensional Fund Advisors of Santa Monica, Calif., has named Darla M. Hastings to the new position of chief marketing officer.
Ms. Hastings, 51, has more than 25 years’ experience in domestic and international marketing, brand management and communications across a range of industries. Most recently, she was senior vice president of customer experience at Benchmark Assisted Living LLC of Wellesley, Mass.

Flexible Plan Investments Ltd. of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., has appointed R. Scott Garretson sales manager. The firm provides managed accounts for retirement plan participants and investment risk management services for individual investors.
Mr. Garretson, 43, was an administrative manager at Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. of New York. He spent five years managing a staff of 100 financial representatives. Mr. Garretson brings 10 years’ experience to his position.
