Smith, 45, as senior vice president and director of mutual funds. Mr. Sheehan had been vice president for institutional marketing in Chicago for Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., while Mr. Smith served as senior vice president and director of external and internal distribution at Bisys Fund Services in New York.

Artisan Partners in Milwaukee has appointed Marina Carlson, 34, partner and co-portfolio manager of the firm’s small-cap growth offerings, including the Artisan Small Cap Fund. She replaces Millie Hurwitz, who is retiring.

MainStay Institutional Funds Inc. in Parsippany, N.J., has named Mark Strazzeri, 42, liaison with the investment management consulting community. Mr. Strazzeri joined MainStay in 1995, and most recently served as national sales manager for Western region broker-dealers.

Island ECN Inc. of New York, an alternative trading system, has appointed Jack Vensel, 37, vice president of sales. He had a similar job at Instinet Corp. in New York.

National Discount Broker Group, an online brokerage and financial services company in Jersey City, N.J., appointed Frank E. Lawatsch Jr., 54, executive vice president and general counsel. He had been a senior partner at the law firm of Gibbons DelDeo Dolan Griffinger and Vecchinone in Cranford, N.J.

Denise Isaac, 33, was promoted to executive vice president for corporate development and new initiatives, from chief financial officer.

Matthew S. Stradler, 44, was named senior vice president and chief financial officer. He had been senior vice president and chief financial officer of Santander Investment Securities Inc. in New York.

Gregg Sharenow, 35, was promoted to co-chief operating officer of the subsidiary National Discount Brokers/NBD.com, from managing director. He has been with the company since 1996.

Prudential Investments, a unit of Prudential Insurance Co. of America in Newark, N.J., has appointed Beverly J. Moore, 39, senior vice president and head of marketing for its Advisory Group. Ms. Moore joins Prudential from DLJ Asset Management Group in New York, where she was senior vice president and director of marketing.

C.S. McKee & Co. in Pittsburgh has named Brian S. Allen, 32, vice president and portfolio manager. A certified financial analyst, he was a fixed-income portfolio manager at Patterson Capital Corp. in Los Angeles.

Reliastar Financial Corp. in Minneapolis has promoted Wayne Huneke, 47, to senior executive vice president, from senior vice president. He joined the company in 1986.

Copper Mountain Trust in Portland, Ore., has appointed Thomas Ryan, 34, director of its WealthTrack corporate retirement plan group. Most recently he was a retirement plan manager for T. Rowe Price & Associates in Baltimore.

Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. in New York has named Young Chin, 42, head of equity management and director of equity management research. He held a similar job at BlackRock Financial Management in Wayne, Pa.

R. Meeder & Associates, a money manager in Dublin, Ohio, has named Ronald C. Paul, 51, treasurer. He had been controller.

Winslow Capital Management in Minneapolis has appointed Justin H. Kelly, 28, managing director for the equity investment team. Mr. Kelly was co-manager of technology research at Investment Advisers Inc. in Minneapolis.

Dain Rauscher Inc. in Minneapolis has named John Adams, 38, director of equity research, and Ted Mortonson, 40, director of institutional equity sales at the firm’s Dain Rauscher Wessels division.

Mr. Adams joined the division in 1995 and most recently was a technology analyst. He will lead the company’s 34 analysts.

Mr. Mortonson joined Dain Rauscher in 1994, and served as institutional equity sales manager for Wessels’ Western region. He is now in charge of the division’s 27 salespeople.

Liberty Financial Cos. Inc. in Boston has hired Philip K. Polkinghorn, 41, as president of its Keyport Life Insurance Co. subsidiary. He recently served as chief financial officer and president of the product and marketing center at American General Financial Group in Evansville, Ind.

Ashbridge Investment Management Inc. in Philadelphia has named Jason Taylor, 29, director of research and investment analysis. Mr. Taylor served as senior account manager for the Americas at Standard & Poor’s Micropal Inc. in New York.

American National Insurance Co. in Galveston, Texas, has elected David A. Behrens executive vice president of independent marketing. Mr. Behrens, 36, had been a director and marketing senior vice president at Lincoln Benefit Life in Lincoln, Neb.
