Regulators approve equity-indexed annuities rule

The SEC has approved a rule that calls for equity index annuities to be regulated as securities.

The SEC has approved a rule that calls for equity index annuities to be regulated as securities. Approved in December by a 4-1 vote, the new rule establishes standards for determining when such annuities are not considered annuity contracts under securities laws. The rule will apply to equity index annuities issued after Jan. 12, 2011. For more details, sec.gov/rules/final/2009/33-8996.pdf.
