A new website hopes to succeed by providing a virtual vault that provides access to vital family documents. WeRemember.org from Glenview, Ill., is envisioned as an online safety deposit box where people can list where important documents can be found, or they can store their wills, insurance policies and other financial documents that are required to settle an estate. “After working in the life insurance business, we discovered a major flaw in the system: unless your loved ones know where your important documents are, there's no way for them to inherit your wealth or carry out your wishes,” said Joe Palmer, a co-founder of the website, in a statement. WeRemember.org asks members for the name of the insurance companies from which they bought their policies, the beneficiary's name and phone number and the name of their broker. In addition, members have the option to provide their social security numbers, policy numbers and policy amounts. Use of the site is free. To find members that have died, the WeRemember.org database is matched against the Social Security Administration Death Index as well as to hundreds of public and government databases. When there is a match, it is verified by contacting the member's “designated third-party verifier,” who is usually a friend of the family, but not a beneficiary, who can verify that the member has died. Only after the death is confirmed, does WeRemember.org contact the beneficiaries and share the deceased's information. The application, which is free to optionsXpress users, enables them to access trading tools like the company's Dragon market scanning engine, view updated account balances, pending orders and current positions.
